The iconic Apple iPod Classic is no more

It was a wonderful music device, brought Apple out of bankruptcy single-handed and shaped an entire generation of technology users. Now, Apple has finally ended the iPod Classic era.

For years, rumors abounded through the internet of the iPod Classic’s death; the last time the device was given a service update was in September 2009. That is five years without any company support. It was finally confirmed yesterday; Apple no longer sells its iconic music player in its stores.

The sound of iPod’s silence has carried for much longer. From the time the iPhone and iPod Touch was introduced, the classic wheel clickers started to decline in financial and public significance. Since its introduction, the iPod Touch makes up the majority of all Apple music device sales. Apple regularly noted that more than half of iPod units were iPod Touch models, but stopped declaring that information years ago. Apple’s accessories are now a larger business than its iPod line, including first-party and third-party hardware peripherals.

Price was also a major factor. Although the iPod Classic offered a lot of on-board storage, it started at around $250, compared with the iPod touch at $199. The iPod Touch, iPhones and every other product with a lower-case ‘I’ offered internet connectivity for streaming online music and radio programs, all of which the iPod Classic doesn’t have. A physical click wheel was no longer enough to offer the customers.

Portable music devices have been heading towards streaming models for a long time. From Microsoft to Google to Samsung, Apple has finally decided to emulate their competitors and embrace streaming music on a device. This can be seen in a number of new products being offered this season. The iPod Classic, unfortunately, is seen as a symbol of the old way, and Apple has decided not to carry it into future years.

Ending the iPod Classic will help streamline Apple’s supply chain, shifting entirely from traditional hard disk drives to faster solid-state drives in all portable product lines. Apple will still carry hard disk drives in larger computers, including some Macs. In addition, Apple can retire all of its iPod Classic manufacturing machines and infrastructure, which is most likely worn out after a solid decade of making the product line.

But no matter how much financial sense it makes, ending the iPod Classic is an emotional loss. Not since the Sony Walkman has a portable music device been appreciated and used in so many ways by so many people. Perhaps the most enduring image of the iPod—apart from founder Steve Jobs using it—comes from the post-apocalyptic movie “Book of Eli”. We see Denzel Washington crossing a nuclear wasteland, defending himself from raiders, horror and depression with four tools: his trusty sword, a pair of aviator sunglasses, the leather-bound book he was sworn to protect— and his iPod Classic, faithfully piping a soundtrack of smooth rhythm and blues into his ears, keeping Denzel’s spirit alive as he walks on. This, too, is a symbol of the device’s enduring legacy.

Rest in peace, iPod Classic. You will be missed.

Holiday season 2014 MacBook Air release with Core M processors still uncertain

A remodeled MacBook Air could be in the works for a pre-Christmas release as Intel launches updated Core M processors worldwide.

First announced at Computex in June, Intel wanted to remind people of the features and capability of their M chipsets at another expo, the IFA 2014 trade show. Intel has confirmed that various devices using the Core M processor will appear during the holiday season.

Because of Apple and Intel’s close business relationship, this is seen as a hint that new MacBook Air laptops could arrived just in time for Christmas.

Initial speculation was that the MacBook Air would be released earlier in the fall, but was pushed back due to other pressing announcements, such as the Apple Watch and iPhone 6. Intel’s shipment of new Broadwell chips was also allegedly delayed for unknown reasons.

The first batch of the Core M processors will be shipped by the end of this year.

Because of an agreement, Apple will be the first to use the Core M, leading the way to making thinner and lighter MacBook Pro and Air laptops.

Intel said that the new 14mm processors will work perfectly in laptops and tablets without the need for a cooling fan. The chips are expected to generate a 50% increase in performance of a device and at least 1/3 faster graphical performance. The processors will also increase battery life of a device by one and a half hours, due to redesigned power efficiency.

Rumors about the new MacBook Air have been emerging for a while, centered on the Retina display added to the device.

Some of the features expected to be seen on the MacBook Air include a 12-inch monitor with a 2K pixel resolution, 500 GB solid state drive and 8 GB of RAM, the use of USB 3.0 ports, Thunderbolt 2.0, a memory card reader and a FaceTime camera rendered in 720p.

Apple has not yet responded to these rumors for comment.

How to remove the free U2 album from iTunes and iPhone

Apple recently automatically gave everyone with iTunes a free copy of U2’s new album “Songs of Innocence,” but many people are actually up in arms about this digital intrusion. Some simply are not fans or even follow that genre of music.

Apple will not let you delete the album but it is easy to hide the album in iTunes. In fact you may not even see the album at first in your library if you don’t have “Show All Music” setting enabled.

Heres how to hide the album from iTunes:
  1. Open iTunes
  2. Navigate to the iTunes Store
  3. Click on Purchased under Quick Links
  4. Locate U2’s “Songs of Innocence”
  5. Hover and Click the X in the upper-left-hand corner of the album

That album is now hidden in iTunes, but you’ll still see it on your iPhone because of the “Show All Music” setting we mentioned earlier.

Lets take a look at how to fix that on your iPhone:
  1. On your iPhone, navigate to Settings
  2. Select Music
  3. Turn off Show All Music

Done! Enjoy your U2 free iPhone and iTunes.

According to Apple: The Apple Watch is water resistant, not waterproof

New details about Apple’s latest products keep emerging every day, for example the Apple Watch’s ability to withstand water.

Apple revealed the bad news to journalists at the Hands–on Pavilion after the main event: the Apple Watch is considered “water resistant,” not waterproof.

Activities like jogging in the rain, washing your hands, or cooking while wearing it are all fine. But users should not swim with the watch, shower with the watch or wear it in any activity involving significant amounts of water.

This is a major blow for users who were hoping to have a wearable smart device to use during water sports. Apple fans are already hoping future designs may actually be waterproof.

On the bright side, Apple also demonstrated that users can directly load apps onto the Apple Watch from an iPhone. The Apps can be rearranged on the home screen by dragging and dropping, like iOS can do. There is also a new “Ping My Phone” button on the watch that helps you locate your phone by following the beeping sound to where you last left it.

In addition, a fashionable gold version of the Apple Watch will come in a “gorgeous jewelry box” which doubles as a battery charger, according to Apple. The back of the box will have a Lightning connector, while the inside contains the watch’s charger pad, allowing the Apple Watch to be charged overnight.

More details about the Watch remain unrevealed, such as additional pricing beyond the base U.S. $349 model. Apple is also undecided on offering customers the ability to mix & match bands as some fans had hoped for.

Why Apple Pay will change the way we checkout

On Tuesday, Apple announced the brand new Apple Pay, a new feature that uses your iPhone to electronically pay for goods and services instead of a traditional credit or debit card. Here are some ways that it’s useful and efficient for people to use:

It’s vastly more secure than bank cards

Your average debit and credit card uses a magnetic strip along the side with a unique 16-digit number. When you swipe your card through a cashier’s card reader, the reader copies and sends your number to your bank for verification before the transaction is done. Because your card is unique, anyone who can access your card number can use your information. Your only option is to call the bank and report fraudulent charges before your bank account is drained.

Apple Pay uses far more complex security for transactions

Instead of relying on one number, your iPhone uses “tokenization”, which can generate a random 16-digit number alongside your real 16-digit number, verify and confirm the two, and send the random number into the card reader to complete the transaction. Your iPhone will generate a completely new 16-digit number for every purchase you make, so hackers will never be able to break into your code and access your bank account.

In addition, none of your financial information is stored in Apple’s servers or on your iPhone. According to Apple, the company does not and will not keep track of any purchases made with your iPhone. Your information will always be secure.

Your iPhone can be used at different stores around the world

Apple Pay will be used at stores and establishments throughout the world, and at any retailer with an Apple Pay-compatible register. Whole Foods, McDonald’s Subway and Sephora are some of the businesses that are ready to accept iPhone as a means of payment. Unlike in traditional card transactions, the cashier will never ask for your iPhone to enter information, nor scan the iPhone by themselves. You will have total control over you phone at all times during the transaction. McDonald’s has even announced a special drive-thru pay terminal where uses will be able to tap and connect your iPhone to pay for a meal. Convenient banking, indeed.

And if you happen to lose your phone, you will be able to log into iCloud and suspend any payments, then be able to secure your phone so you can track it down.

Apple has announced a lot for this new mechanism, and details are still coming in. It’s very likely that all of the bugs haven’t yet been worked out of the system, and Apple is still fine-tuning the basics even as this article goes to press. Stay tuned for all the latest updates and information as it happens.
