Three most popular ways to use Windows on Mac OS X

Must of us who have chosen Apple and their user-friendly, stable OS over PC have done so because we prefer it to the other options on the market today. That choice may be based on previous computing experiences, our belief in the brand, what we need to use our computers for or just personal opinion. Whatever the reason, most people are either “Mac” or “PC.” But what about those instances where crossover is necessary? Some niche software or career demands require hardcore Mac users to delve into Windows territory. There are even some websites out there that still only run on Internet Explorer.

Thankfully, for Mac users who have to cross over to PC on occasion, it’s not necessary to purchase another computer. Instead, a parallel installation of a Windows operating system can be done right on Macs, resulting in increased convenience and money saved.

There are several different methods of achieving a Mac/Windows hybrid. Here are three of the most popular:

1. Boot Camp

Boot Camp is Mac software that comes included with OS X Lion and Mountain Lion. With it, you can run compatible versions of Windows, such as the new Windows 8, on an Intel-based Mac computer.

Officially, Boot Camp is a set of drivers that allow users with compatible Macs to partition their hard drive for a parallel installation of Windows. It’s compatible with a large number of Mac drivers, but essentially recognizes the Windows and OS X installations as two separate computers, going so far as to require iTunes users to authorize the Windows install as a separate computer within their accounts.

2. Parallels

Parallels does virtually the same thing as Boot Camp – it enables you to partition your hard drive and have parallel installations of OS X and Windows 8. However, instead of being a featured set of drivers within your Mac that require setting up, it’s actually a software program you can purchase online or from the electronics store of your choice.

Parallels is a popular choice for some people as it doesn’t necessitate making as many manual tweaks and configurations as Boot Camp. Furthermore, the purchase includes support for Retina display, Thunderbolt and many other features. Essentially, it provides the best of both worlds with easy switching between immersive and complete Mac and Windows environments. In addition, Parallels provides mobile apps that allow users to carry Windows functionality over to the iPad and iPhone.

3. VMWare Fusion

Suggested for home users who want to install Windows on an Apple computer, VMWare Fusion is a less-intimidating but still functional solution for those who may simply want the parallel install for nothing more than the ability to play PC games on a Mac. Switching between operating systems is easy, and the user-friendly experience is extended by letting users manage their desktop and interact with their Windows OS like it was a Mac – complete with dock.

Another option worth considering is VirtualBox. A “feature rich, high-performance product,” it’s less consumer-targeted than Parallels or VMWare Fusion. VirtualBox markets itself as a professional solution that will meet the most specific lists of criteria, yet is available entirely as Open Source Software, backed by a dedicated tech community. It’s available for Mac, Windows and Linux and enables users to have a virtual experience of another operating system.

Whether you need to use specific business or scientific software or you’re just eager to check out computer games that are still targeted only for PC, there are many reasons you may want to set up a parallel installation of Windows 8 on your Mac. Fortunately, there are also several options that will enable you to do so.

Apple to build US plant and manufacture sapphire glass

Some great news for the American tech industry and job market has surfaced recently. Apple is in the process of building a manufacturing facility in Mesa, Arizona that will provide an estimated 2000 employment opportunities.

The plant is expected to employ approximately 1300 workers throughout the construction process and an additional 700 once it’s completely in operation. And it’s not just a positive development for the local job market, either. It’s also good for the environment. Apple’s new facility will run on 100% renewable energy from day one of operations. What’s more, Apple is apparently also building a solar power grid that will accompany the facility and fuel the work done within it.

The Mesa plant will reportedly be manufacturing Sapphire Glass components, which Apple uses to protect cameras on iPhones and iPads. This marvelous material is renowned for its superior durability and scratch resistance. It’s also, of course, the stuff that goes into the home buttons on the new iPhone 5s, which is equipped with fingerprint-reading Touch ID. With iPhone 5s sales booming, and putting the company far ahead of their competitors once again, manufacturing in Arizona is guaranteed to be on a massive scale.

While solid reports to date have only indicated the plant will product these components, other industry insiders and Apple fans have guessed that the Arizona facility will also be the production home for the fabled iWatch, which would likely also use Sapphire Glass. Whether or not that is the case is yet to be seen. However, regardless of what the plant is used for, it is likely to contribute to the economy in Mesa for years to come. Such a large investment by Apple signals long-term growth and career opportunities for the foreseeable future.

Announcements about the Arizona production facility are welcome news to many who have been wondering about Apple’s position on maintaining American jobs. Last December, CEO Tim Cook famously announced the company’s intention to invest $100 million in American-based facilities. However, until news of the Arizona plant surfaced, the company’s only gesture since the announcement was to set up a Mac Pro production facility in Texas.

The Texas plant was initially seen as a token gesture by many critics who felt that Apple wasn’t serious about keeping jobs in the USA. The company, of course, is well known for contracting exclusively to third parties overseas for the manufacturing needs. However, by bringing another, larger sector of their business to America, Apple has made a statement that they are serious about making good on Tim Cook’s promise. Furthermore, by making the decision to stick with completely renewable energy for the new facility, they have also made it well known that they are considerate of the environmental impact.

Millions of consumers, in the USA and across the globe, eagerly await the latest Apple news and products. By bringing more jobs to America and putting in the effort to “think green” the company is likely to win over even more supporters.

Apple iPhone Touch ID security review

Real life is imitating science fiction with the latest Apple development, seen on the brand new iPhone 5s. Fingerprint scanning, or “Touch ID” as Apple has dubbed it, is the latest in smartphone protection and convenience. This incredible technology has the world abuzz – with many people marveling at how far mobile phones have come, some raising concerns over security issues and a massive amount of consumers clamoring to be among the first to own a 5s.

Touch ID is centered on the iPhone’s home button, which on the 5s is now made of sapphire crystal, a material similar to glass that protects the sensor underneath. Sapphire crystal also acts as a lens so the sensor can focus on your fingerprint. Around the edge of the home button is a steel ring, which helps it to detect your finger, prompting the sensor to read the ridges and patterns in your print and function accordingly.

When initially setting up your new iPhone 5s, you’ll be required to register your fingerprint on the device by touching it to the home button. From then on, a match will unlock your phone. It can also be used in place of a traditional password to make purchases through iTunes, iBooks and the Mac App Store.

While some people have voiced concerns over the level of security a fingerprint provides, Apple ensures that it is both incredibly safe and remarkably convenient. A fingerprint, according to the computing giant, is one of the best passwords going. You always have it with you, you can’t forget it, and no two are alike.

Fingerprint data stored within the iPhone 5s is encrypted and stored securely within that smartphone’s lightning-fast new A7 chip, where it is locked away from everything but the touch sensor itself. It is worth noting, for those who do have concerns, that the iPhone 5s does not store images of fingerprints, and print data isn’t kept in Apple’s servers or on the iCloud. It is also not available to app developers.

New technology always excites would-be hackers. With the iPhone 5s, much like any other computing device, there is always a chance someone may attempt to crack the encrypted chip. However, a fingerprint provides an exceptional level of security of that is the case. Unlike cracking traditional passwords, there is no way to reverse engineering fingerprint data, making the data stored within your smartphone incredibly safe.

Furthermore, for those who may raise security concerns likely based on something from films or television, it should also be pointed out that artificial fingers molded with stolen fingerprints won’t work to unlock the iPhone 5s. More morbidly, neither will a severed finger! The sensor under the sapphire crystal home button doesn’t read the dead level on the outside of your finger. Rather, it detects prints based on sub-epidermal layers of skin. That makes it effective only with real fingers – still attached to the rest of your body.

Apple advises that Touch ID technology is extremely accurate, and the sensor on your iPhone 5s will get better the more you use it. While it can read multiple fingers in any orientation, keep in mind that it’s not effective with fingers that are sweaty, have had lotion freshly applied or are marred with burns or scars.

At present, the only other smartphone on the market with fingerprint technology is Motorola’s Atrix Android phone, which has been out since 2011. However, it seems that many people have either forgotten or just don’t know about it, as the hype over the 5s has far overshadowed that fact. Even Motorola seems to have forgotten they offer it, judging by a recent tweet poking fun at consumers getting excited about the new 5s. Given the excitement over Touch ID, though, it is likely that Apple’s main competitors, such as Samsung, may follow suit and come out with something similar soon.

In the meantime, with the iPhone 5s’s Touch ID, Apple has shown once again that they can indeed still innovate.

Late 2013 MacBook Pro owners reporting multiple issues

A great number of consumers are still experiencing significant problems with MacBook Pro Retina laptops purchased in the latter part of this year. While at first it seemed that the only issues were with displays, it’s now become apparent that the problems stretch beyond that.

Many users in an astounding 112-page Apple support thread are reporting that their keyboards and trackpads lock up randomly during a wide variety of tasks, making it difficult to pinpoint the cause of the trouble. Performing a hard reset through the power button is the only temporary fix known right now for this frustrating error. Furthermore, it’s not yet been determined whether such lockups are a hardware or software-related issue.

Others have discovered issues while using BootCamp to install Windows 8 or 8.1. An additional 15-page support thread documents repeated occurrences of freezing and copying errors when attempting to perform the installation through USB, DVD or via an external device such as a SuperDrive. There is some indication that tweaking certain settings within BootCamp may solve the issue, but the consistently growing thread of MacBook Pro Retina users experiencing it is hard to ignore.

As if the freezing and BootCamp woes weren’t enough, yet further purchasers of late-model MacBook Pro Retina computers have reported low battery life, fans speeding up and slowing down at unexpected times and other overall stability problems. These matters, of course, are all in addition to the main trouble with the laptops: major display defects.

Primarily seen in models with displays supplied by LG, the affected MacBooks have issues with ghosting and burn-in on their screens as well as other graphics defects. Unfortunately, recent reports now suggest that a few of the laptops with alternate Samsung displays are experiencing problems, too.

What’s to be done about the repeated problems with the MacBook Pro Retina computers? Nobody is quite sure. An official statement has yet to be put forth, and Apple retail store employees are often ill equipped to handle the myriad of problems. Up until now, the unofficial policy seems to be to replace the notebooks until the affected consumers end up with one that works – usually one with a Samsung display. However, for some people that means setting up and consequently having to replace computers upwards of nine times, leaving it up to the luck of the draw.

Nothing is perfect, and it would be unreasonable to assume that Apple would never produce a product with flaws. However, they do tend to have an above average record of releasing highly quality tech that’s as functional as it is beautiful. The stability of Mac computers and other Apple devices have earned them millions of repeat purchasers who are loyal to such as extent that they’ve helped shape Apple from a computer company to a cultural icon. That’s why having such significant issues such as those with the MacBook Pro Retina, not to mention being less-than-speedy with a solution, stands out.

Apple could help themselves and the consumers who have purchased the defective laptops by developing a clear policy on how they’ll handle the problems going forward. It would best be aided by providing those instructions to Apple stores and licensed resellers worldwide. Furthermore, they should also identify what the primary sources of the troubles are and what will be done differently with future models of MacBook Pro Retinas to avoid additional, similar issues.

The longer the company lingers without nipping this problem in the bud, the worse it becomes. While long-time Mac enthusiasts will likely stick with the company through the frustration, it is possible that newcomers will be put off by it.

No game-changing products for Apple since Steve Jobs

Apple’s latest event was promoted with invitations stating, “we still have a lot to cover.” Judging by the wide range of topics and products they touched on during the press conference, it certainly wasn’t false advertising. It wasn’t, however, terribly exciting, either.

While the new iPad Air and revamped iPad Mini have received the majority of the attention from consumers and tech experts alike, Apple executives made a number of smaller announcements as well. Foremost after the iPad news is the fact that the new Mavericks operating system is available, and it’s free. Any Apple user with a system capable of handling the latest OS is able to download it, at no cost, from the Mac App Store. In addition, the iWork and iLife suites of applications have been upgraded considerably, and updates for them are also available on the App Store and iTunes Store at no additional cost.

Though the latest series of Apple announcements have further established the computing giant as a provider of premium hardware with prices to match, such as the soon-to-be-released $3000 Mac Pro desktop and $799 iPad Air, it has also dropped prices in other instances. Apple slashed prices on older iPad models, in what many are calling an attempt to compete with the lower-cost Amazon, Google and Microsoft tablets. Furthermore, the prices for MacBook Pro laptops are being discounted by $200.

Despite a myriad of interesting announcements, some in the tech world have felt that the latest Apple event lacked focus. It covered a lot of ground, but there were no significant revelations in any one category. Even the upgrades to iPads and apps were expected, and in line with recent developments from Apple’s competitors. They’re good, but they aren’t terribly exciting or innovative.

If it wasn’t apparent already, the most recent Apple event solidified the fact that the company, while still great, isn’t the same without Steve Jobs. This is not the same Apple that changed the world with the iPhone and shook up consumers and technological rivals with the iPad. While developments such as Thunderbolt and Mavericks are great, they aren’t earth shattering. Still, because we all remember the early days of the iPhone and the eagerness to line up overnight and be the first with the new Apple gadget, we continue to hope that each next product release will be “the big one” again.

Items such as the iPad Mini with retina display or iPhones with Touch ID are fantastic. Despite expected low fourth quarter earnings, the iPhone 5s has been a bestseller, and reportedly 200 million devices are running iOS 7. Apple is arguably the most valuable public company in the world. Unfortunately, recent products have failed to create excitement and capture hearts like earlier Apple tech did. While the company will steadily continue, in many smaller ways, to shape cultural and technological trends, it will take a major product release like the fabled iWatch or even a significant update to an existing product, such as an infrared keyboard, to really get the world buzzing about Apple again.
