Opening iPhone 6 sales top $10 Million

It’s always a newsworthy event when Apple launches a new product. Apple doesn’t even have to advertise as much as other companies when they are launching a new product. It simply has to be announced and it stirs up a social media frenzy and a long line of customers outside almost every Apple store. It’s always an exciting event to get to hold and play with the latest new Apple gadget.

The weekend launch of the new Apple iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus was not different in its excitement and buying frenzy as well. Over the weekend, Apple iPhone sales were over 10 million. Ten million is what people like Ben Reitzes of Barclays and Walt Piecyk at BTIG predicted would happen for Apple during its launch. So it came as no surprise. This amount was a record amount for Apple and came as a nice surprise to CEO Tim Cook. Although, Mr. Cook is always looking to improve Apple’s productivity and sales of its products. In a statement over the weekend he said, “Sales for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus exceeded our expectations for the launch weekend… While our team managed the manufacturing ramp better than ever before, we could have sold many more iPhones with greater supply and we are working hard to fill orders as quickly as possible.”

When accurately researching the sales numbers for last year’s opening weekend launch of its iPhone 5, 5S, and 5C, Apple reported that phone sales were at 9 million. However, according to Gene Munster at Piper Jaffray, many of Apple’s iPhone 5Cs just sat in the pipeline, without actually being moved or sold.  So, in actuality, the number of iPhone 5s sold last year was 5.4 million. When compared to the number of iPhone 6s sold this year, this was a quite a large gain. And this large number of 10 million iPhone 6s sold over the weekend is even more significant because the phones were not sold in China, a relatively huge market.

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will be a very important seller for Apple, probably its most popular seller. This is in large because in the past Apple has always sold phones that had the standard 4-inch screen. Now, their new phones are bigger screens – 4.7-inch for the iPhone 6 and 5.5-inch for the iPhone 6 Plus. This is in direct competition with other phones like the Android phones.

Still, investors will have to wait and see how well the iPhone 6 phones do with sales in the future since opening sales are always high because of demand. This high, however, will only continue as long as Apple keeps its supply of phones up.

Will Apple release a new Mac mini in time for the holidays?

Rumors of a new Apple Mac mini have swirling for quite some time now.

Some Apple fans were expecting Mac mini announcements, statements or teasers during the worldwide Apple event held last on September 9th. Lots of other products were discussed (the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, the wearable Apple Watch, U2’s free album, Apple Pay to name a few) but absolutely nothing on the Mac mini.

Understandably, this has fans feeling a little disappointed.

Rumors previously speculated launch date of February 2014, but it’s now September and still nothing. Some are suggesting there might not be any Apple Mac mini at all this year, thanks to a lull in reports and insider statements from Apple employees.

The most recent report, by 9to5mac, showed a cached page from Apple support that hinted at a Mid-2014 release. But that time has come and gone.

For its part, Apple has never confirmed rumors about any of its releases, opting instead to let public hype build up until they make their own announcement. Fans are still hopeful for a 2014 release.

According to various Mac mini rumor sites, the a future Mac mini will be shipped with OS X Yosemite and will be powered by Iris-integrated graphics and Haswell processors.

The upcoming device will also implement next-generation 802.11 Mac-based Wi-Fi internet, suggesting three times the connectivity speed of existing Mac wireless networks. The Mac mini will also contain the latest Mac OS features, including HandOff, AirDrop, MailDrop, Continuity and a host of other unnamed software programs.

The current Mac mini comes in two build types and there is little doubt that the next Mac mini will follow suit but with better specs, while still maintaining the pricing structure of $599 and $799.

Some speculation points to a November or December release just in time for the 2014 holiday season, to allow the iPhone and the Apple Watch enough time to establish themselves in the public eye before a other new Apple products are introduced.

The iconic Apple iPod Classic is no more

It was a wonderful music device, brought Apple out of bankruptcy single-handed and shaped an entire generation of technology users. Now, Apple has finally ended the iPod Classic era.

For years, rumors abounded through the internet of the iPod Classic’s death; the last time the device was given a service update was in September 2009. That is five years without any company support. It was finally confirmed yesterday; Apple no longer sells its iconic music player in its stores.

The sound of iPod’s silence has carried for much longer. From the time the iPhone and iPod Touch was introduced, the classic wheel clickers started to decline in financial and public significance. Since its introduction, the iPod Touch makes up the majority of all Apple music device sales. Apple regularly noted that more than half of iPod units were iPod Touch models, but stopped declaring that information years ago. Apple’s accessories are now a larger business than its iPod line, including first-party and third-party hardware peripherals.

Price was also a major factor. Although the iPod Classic offered a lot of on-board storage, it started at around $250, compared with the iPod touch at $199. The iPod Touch, iPhones and every other product with a lower-case ‘I’ offered internet connectivity for streaming online music and radio programs, all of which the iPod Classic doesn’t have. A physical click wheel was no longer enough to offer the customers.

Portable music devices have been heading towards streaming models for a long time. From Microsoft to Google to Samsung, Apple has finally decided to emulate their competitors and embrace streaming music on a device. This can be seen in a number of new products being offered this season. The iPod Classic, unfortunately, is seen as a symbol of the old way, and Apple has decided not to carry it into future years.

Ending the iPod Classic will help streamline Apple’s supply chain, shifting entirely from traditional hard disk drives to faster solid-state drives in all portable product lines. Apple will still carry hard disk drives in larger computers, including some Macs. In addition, Apple can retire all of its iPod Classic manufacturing machines and infrastructure, which is most likely worn out after a solid decade of making the product line.

But no matter how much financial sense it makes, ending the iPod Classic is an emotional loss. Not since the Sony Walkman has a portable music device been appreciated and used in so many ways by so many people. Perhaps the most enduring image of the iPod—apart from founder Steve Jobs using it—comes from the post-apocalyptic movie “Book of Eli”. We see Denzel Washington crossing a nuclear wasteland, defending himself from raiders, horror and depression with four tools: his trusty sword, a pair of aviator sunglasses, the leather-bound book he was sworn to protect— and his iPod Classic, faithfully piping a soundtrack of smooth rhythm and blues into his ears, keeping Denzel’s spirit alive as he walks on. This, too, is a symbol of the device’s enduring legacy.

Rest in peace, iPod Classic. You will be missed.

Holiday season 2014 MacBook Air release with Core M processors still uncertain

A remodeled MacBook Air could be in the works for a pre-Christmas release as Intel launches updated Core M processors worldwide.

First announced at Computex in June, Intel wanted to remind people of the features and capability of their M chipsets at another expo, the IFA 2014 trade show. Intel has confirmed that various devices using the Core M processor will appear during the holiday season.

Because of Apple and Intel’s close business relationship, this is seen as a hint that new MacBook Air laptops could arrived just in time for Christmas.

Initial speculation was that the MacBook Air would be released earlier in the fall, but was pushed back due to other pressing announcements, such as the Apple Watch and iPhone 6. Intel’s shipment of new Broadwell chips was also allegedly delayed for unknown reasons.

The first batch of the Core M processors will be shipped by the end of this year.

Because of an agreement, Apple will be the first to use the Core M, leading the way to making thinner and lighter MacBook Pro and Air laptops.

Intel said that the new 14mm processors will work perfectly in laptops and tablets without the need for a cooling fan. The chips are expected to generate a 50% increase in performance of a device and at least 1/3 faster graphical performance. The processors will also increase battery life of a device by one and a half hours, due to redesigned power efficiency.

Rumors about the new MacBook Air have been emerging for a while, centered on the Retina display added to the device.

Some of the features expected to be seen on the MacBook Air include a 12-inch monitor with a 2K pixel resolution, 500 GB solid state drive and 8 GB of RAM, the use of USB 3.0 ports, Thunderbolt 2.0, a memory card reader and a FaceTime camera rendered in 720p.

Apple has not yet responded to these rumors for comment.

How to remove the free U2 album from iTunes and iPhone

Apple recently automatically gave everyone with iTunes a free copy of U2’s new album “Songs of Innocence,” but many people are actually up in arms about this digital intrusion. Some simply are not fans or even follow that genre of music.

Apple will not let you delete the album but it is easy to hide the album in iTunes. In fact you may not even see the album at first in your library if you don’t have “Show All Music” setting enabled.

Heres how to hide the album from iTunes:
  1. Open iTunes
  2. Navigate to the iTunes Store
  3. Click on Purchased under Quick Links
  4. Locate U2’s “Songs of Innocence”
  5. Hover and Click the X in the upper-left-hand corner of the album

That album is now hidden in iTunes, but you’ll still see it on your iPhone because of the “Show All Music” setting we mentioned earlier.

Lets take a look at how to fix that on your iPhone:
  1. On your iPhone, navigate to Settings
  2. Select Music
  3. Turn off Show All Music

Done! Enjoy your U2 free iPhone and iTunes.
